Can artificial turf be laid over concrete? Yes, and it's usually the best base

One of the questions we get asked most at Payresa is whether it's a good idea to install synthetic turf directly over concrete, cement, tile or a slab. The short answer is yes: concrete is, in fact, one of the most stable and predictable bases for a well-installed artificial turf.

The reasons are technical:

Solid, level base. There will be no sinking, footprints or "puddling" typical of a poorly compacted earth base.
No heavy ground preparation needed. You save the excavation, aggregate and plate compactor stage.
Full compatibility with adhesives. Polyurethane glues and sealants bond perfectly to cured cement.
Homogeneous, long-lasting result. No weeds, no bulging roots, no anthills.

When is it not a good idea to install turf over concrete?

To be transparent, we'll warn you: there are three scenarios where it's best not to install yet, or to take extra precautions. Spotting this beforehand avoids problems six months down the line.

The concrete has a reverse slope or forms "puddles". If a bucket of water thrown on it doesn't drain away, it won't drain away under the turf either. You need to level it first with self-levelling mortar or outdoor levelling compound.
There's no drain, outlet or perimeter outflow. Without a drainage point, installing a drainage mesh only delays the problem. A drainage point would need to be created.
The concrete is cracked, lifted or has active efflorescence. Cracks should be sealed and the area treated before gluing the turf down; otherwise the cracks will transfer to the backing and bumps will appear.

The critical factor: drainage of artificial turf over concrete

This section wasn't in the previous guide, and yet it's the one that most affects the lifespan of your installation. Modern artificial turf has drainage perforations every 10–15 cm and allows around 60 liters per minute per square meter to pass through. The bottleneck, therefore, isn't the turf: it's the concrete.

Three professional ways to solve drainage over concrete

Spot adhesive every 30 cm around the perimeter, never a continuous bead. This lets water circulate under the turf to the drain.
Drainage mesh or sheet between the concrete and the turf (usual thickness 6–8 mm). This is the recommended option on penthouse terraces and terraces with little slope.
Elastic polyethylene underlay (10–20 mm) if you want to combine drainage + cushioning (children's areas, outdoor gyms).

How to manage the drain

Three solutions we regularly use:

Visible cutout: the turf is cut leaving the drain visible (more practical, less aesthetic).
U-shaped flap: the turf is cut to form a flap that can be lifted on days of heavy rain for cleaning.
Adhesive cover: the turf is trimmed to the exact size of the drain cover and glued only at the four corners, so the drain cover and turf lift together. This is the visually cleanest option.

Materials and tools you need

Roll of artificial turf (standard width: 2 m; some manufacturers offer 4 m). Calculate the actual surface +10% for waste and trims.
Professional cutter with new trapezoidal blades and spares (essential: a worn blade frays the backing).
Tape measure at least 5 m long.
Long straightedge with a built-in level, or a spirit level on a straight rule.
Self-adhesive seam tape (the simplest option for DIY) or geotextile seam tape + two-component polyurethane glue (more resistant, recommended for exposed outdoor areas).
Silicone gun / polyurethane sealant cartridges to fix the perimeter.
Hard, non-metallic bristle brush to lift the fiber at the end.
Silica sand (optional but recommended): helps stabilize the fibers, prevents overheating in the sun and increases lifespan.
Sanitizing perfume for finishing and preventive disinfection.
Basic PPE: knee pads, cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses when using PU glue.

How to choose the right artificial turf for concrete

Not all synthetic turf performs the same over cement. These are the parameters to check before buying (and the ones our Payresa technicians check when recommending a model):

Fiber height: 30–35 mm is the most versatile for terraces and patios; 40–45 mm gives a softer feel in decorative areas; 20–25 mm for high traffic or sports courts.
Density (stitches/m²): from 16,000 stitches/m² is considered mid-to-high range. The higher the density, the better the appearance and resistance.
Total weight (Dtex and g/m²): a high Dtex (from 11,000) indicates thick, durable fibers.
Materials: the best combination for the Mediterranean climate is polyethylene (PE) fiber + monofilament + curled polypropylene (PP) fiber as backing support. The ideal backing is SBR latex or reinforced polyurethane.
UV stabilization: certified treatment is essential. In Málaga, the sun is harsh.
Warranty: reputable brands offer between 4 and 10 years of warranty on the fiber.
Drainage capacity: minimum 60 l/min/m².

HOW TO INSTALL ARTIFICIAL TURF OVER CONCRETE IN 10 STEPS

Step 1. Measure and plan the surface

Step 4. Unroll it and let it relax

Unroll the turf over the surface and leave it to rest for at least 1–2 hours in the sun before cutting. The fibers relax, transport creases disappear and the cuts will come out more precise.

Step 5. Measure and trim on site

Roll the turf back slightly, measure the exact length and cut with the cutter from the back (backing), not from the fibers. For obstacles (columns, corners, drains), mark with chalk on the back every 30 cm before cutting; you'll get a much cleaner cut. Leave a margin of 1–2 cm against the wall: it will be adjusted later when gluing the perimeter.

Step 6. Trim the edges that will be joined

Step 7. Join the pieces with seam tape

You have two options, both valid:

Self-adhesive tape (easier). Lift the edges of both pieces, place the tape centered under the seam, remove the protective paper and lower first one piece and then the other, pressing lightly. Lift each whole side at once to avoid turf fibers getting stuck to the tape and ruining the seam.
Seam tape + two-component polyurethane glue (more resistant). Place the tape under the edges, spread the glue with a notched trowel and lower the pieces pressing only on the backing, never on the fibers.

Step 8. Fix the perimeter with sealant

Apply the sealant / PU glue in spots every 30 cm along the whole perimeter and the seams. Never a continuous bead: water needs to be able to circulate. Press down and leave 24 hours to cure before walking on the area.

Step 9. Brush against the grain and, optionally, spread silica sand

Step 10. Final touch: sanitizing perfume

Apply sanitizing perfume for synthetic turf. It adds a freshly cut grass scent and acts as a preventive disinfectant (especially useful if you have pets).

THE 6 MOST FREQUENT MISTAKES (AND HOW TO AVOID THEM)

These are the mistakes we see when a customer asks us to repair an installation done on their own:

Gluing a continuous bead along the whole perimeter. It blocks drainage. Solution: spot glue every 30 cm.
Installing pieces with the pile facing different directions. The sun creates two visible tones. Solution: check direction before cutting.
Not trimming the edges before joining. The seams show. Solution: trim a full row of stitches on each side.
Skipping the roll's rest period. Creases appear that don't disappear afterward. Solution: 1–2 h in the sun before cutting.
Not planning for the drain. The puddle shows when it rains hard. Solution: U-cut or adhesive cover.
Buying the cheapest turf without checking UV or density. After two summers it loses color in Málaga. Solution: ask for the technical data sheet and UV certificate.
