It adds warmth, protects the wall and slightly improves thermal and acoustic insulation.

At Payresa we have spent over 40 years installing wall coverings, wood flooring and panelling in Málaga, in both homes and commercial premises. In this guide we explain how to install panelling correctly, but also when it's advisable to do it yourself and when it's best to hire a professional.

This article is based on our real on-site experience, not on theoretical recommendations.

What exactly is wood panelling and what is it for

Panelling is a covering that fully or partially covers a wall. Traditionally it's installed on the lower part (half height), although today it's also fitted on the whole wall.

It can be made from:

  • Natural wood
  • MDF or engineered wood
  • PVC
  • Composite
  • Ceramic

Real functions of panelling (beyond aesthetics)

Although many people install it for decoration, panelling serves very practical functions:

  • Protects the wall against knocks and scuffs (hallways, children's bedrooms, offices).
  • Slightly improves thermal insulation.
  • Reduces minor irregularities in the wall.
  • Allows you to renovate without having to skim and paint the whole room.

In older homes in Málaga, for example, we use it a lot to cover walls with small imperfections without the need for major work.

How to install panelling step by step

Below we explain the professional installation process.

1. Preparing the wall (a step almost nobody does right)

Before installing panelling, the wall must be:

  • Dry
  • Level (without major bulges)
  • Free of active damp
  • Free of dust

⚠️ One of the most common mistakes we see is installing panelling on walls with damp.
This causes warping and separation of the slats within a few months.

If there's a skirting board, it must be removed before starting.

2. Installing the battens (base structure)

Battens are wooden strips or profiles that act as support for the slats.

How to fit them correctly

  • Mark the exact height of the panelling with a laser level or a long spirit level.
  • Fit three horizontal lines of battens:Top line (marks the final height)
  • Middle line
  • Bottom line (1-2 cm from the floor)

They're fixed with wall plugs and screws roughly every 40–60 cm.

Important orientation

  • If the slats run vertically → the battens must run horizontally.
  • If the slats run horizontally → the battens must run vertically.

This detail is key for stability.

Fitting the panelling slats

The slats are not screwed directly to the wall. They're fixed to the battens.

Correct process:

  1. Measure and cut each slat to the required height.
  2. Check that the first slat is perfectly vertical (use a level).
  3. Fit the following ones using the tongue-and-groove system.
  4. Fix them using metal staples or hidden fine nails.

💡 Professional tip:
The first slat must be perfectly aligned. If the first one is crooked, the whole panelling job will be too.

Corners and trims: where the professional finish shows

Panelling can be fitted well, but if the trims are poorly done, the result loses quality.

Elements you must install:

  • Interior and exterior corner pieces
  • Top trim moulding
  • Bottom skirting board

These profiles:

  • Hide imperfect cuts
  • Protect edges
  • Improve the visual finish

In professional installations we always dedicate extra time to this stage.

Common mistakes when installing panelling (that we see in customers)

After decades working on homes in Málaga, these are the most common mistakes:

  • Not leaving an expansion gap.
  • Not checking the wall for damp.
  • Fixing directly without battens.
  • Not using a level on the first slat.
  • Poorly finished cuts.
  • Choosing unsuitable material for damp areas.

Especially on the Costa del Sol, ambient humidity can cause problems if a small expansion gap isn't left.

Is it advisable to install panelling yourself?

It depends on the case.

✅ You can do it yourself if:

  • It's a small wall.
  • There are no damp issues.
  • You have some DIY experience.

⚠️ We recommend professional installation if:

  • It's a commercial premises.
  • There are electrical installations behind it.
  • It's natural wood panelling.
  • The wall has significant irregularities.

Poor installation can cause gaps, vibrations or warping over time.

What type of panelling to choose depending on the room

At Payresa we usually recommend:

  • Bedrooms and living rooms → wood or MDF.
  • Bathrooms and kitchens → PVC or moisture-resistant materials.
  • Commercial premises → impact-resistant materials.
  • Coastal areas with high humidity → technical or vinyl materials.

Choosing the right material is just as important as installing it correctly.

Panelling maintenance

Maintenance is simple:

  • Clean with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Avoid excess water.
  • Do not use abrasive products.
  • Check the joints from time to time.

On natural wood, oil or a protective treatment can be applied depending on the finish.
