Types of Wooden Doors

Doors add privacy, warmth and style to your home. Likewise, depending on the features the door offers, you will be able to change its layout, gain a few centimetres or improve the acoustic insulation of the different rooms.

✅➤ Types of Wooden Doors according to their interior finish

The most important criteria that determine the quality of an interior door are: the exterior finish, the interior composition and the frame material. Within the interior composition we can distinguish the following doors.

1️⃣ Solid Doors

These are doors whose structure is made up of chipboard, solid wood or MDF and offer high resistance and both acoustic and thermal insulation. They weigh around 40 kilos.

2️⃣ Hollow Doors

The interior of the door is honeycomb cardboard with a 3mm MDF veneer. They weigh around 20 kilos and are the most economical alternative. Their advantage is their lightness, which helps extend the life of the hinges, while the trade-off is the quality of the insulation.

✅➤ Wooden Door Finishes for their exterior look

It is essential to pay attention to the exterior finish of the door since, depending on the choice you make, you will be able to create different atmospheres.

  • Natural wood: Made with natural wood veneer that may or may not be varnished.
  • Wood effect: Made from medium-density fibreboard (MDF) onto which one or several layers of paper imitating natural wood are applied.
  • Lacquered: Made from MDF board to which several layers of lacquer are applied. In this respect it is essential to mention that the weight or amount of lacquer is measured in grams per square metre and increases the durability of the door. Depending on the weight and the number of layers, the lacquer finish can be standard or plus.

✅➤ Wooden Doors according to their movement

We can distinguish between:

1️⃣ Hinged

They open inwards and take up space. They can have a single leaf or two; glazed, solid, or glass. Double-leaf doors are common in living rooms and dining rooms. One of the sides can be fixed.

2️⃣ Sliding

Their main advantage is that they allow you to make the most of the space. They are especially suitable for small rooms, kitchens or bathrooms. They can be surface-mounted (sliding along the wall and requiring no building work) or recessed (running inside the wall).

Frame

The door's resistance to humidity depends on the material the frame is made of, which can be MDF, water-resistant MDF or solid wood.

Direction of the door

It is essential to think about which opening direction you want your door to have. The factors this choice depends on are the possible obstacles found in the opening movement, such as shelving units or other doors whose opening direction is at the same angle as the new one and, in general, any piece of furniture that would take up space. The opening direction is set from the side on which you push, so that it opens into the room.
