Types of Synthetic Outdoor Floorboards
For some years now, we can divide outdoor decking into two general groups:
- Solid wood decking
- Composite wood decking
Solid Wood Outdoor Floorboards
There are many variants depending on several aspects:
- The installation method
- The wood they are made from
If we look at the wood they are made from, we can also make two divisions
- Coniferous woods
- Tropical woods
The differences between these two types of decking are important, in terms of the greater density and hardness of tropical woods compared to decking made from pine.
Types of Solid Decking
Due to the abrupt humidity changes we experience in Málaga, the most recommended decking is tropical decking, with Ipe being the species that best adapts to these environmental changes, which can cause the boards to grow or shrink to such an extent that, if the installation is not correct, the boards will warp and come loose from their fixings.
Woods such as Iroko, Jatoba… and the highly prized Teak are also recommended. Such a scarce resource is hard to find, both because of its origin and its price.
With pine decking we can considerably reduce the cost of our installation and achieve a very realistic resemblance to tropical decking. Although we lose hardness and density, we should know that coniferous woods absorb more moisture than tropical woods, which translates into greater movement. That is why it is recommended to fit it with screws, since pine decking installed using a clip system is synonymous with problems.
It should not be understood that tropical woods are all advantages, although their biggest drawback is that if we do not treat them with oil every 6 months, our decking can end up oxidising until it looks aged and pale.
Types of Synthetic Outdoor Decking
This is where decking made from Composite wood comes in — artificial decking that requires no maintenance. It is decking manufactured by mixing softwood shavings with PVC.
Within Composite outdoor decking, we also find different variants corresponding to their format and composition.
- Composition
Composite decking differs in the amounts of wood and PVC used, with decking using a smaller amount of PVC being more affordable.
- Format
There is ventilated or hollow-core decking, which is the most affordable because it reduces the use of composite in manufacturing, as it has cells or gaps formed by air which, logically, lowers production costs. There are also solid formats but, in principle, these are more expensive because they use a greater amount of Composite in manufacturing.
